Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of mortality and morbidity globally and it has been estimated that 17.5 million people die each year from such diseases, representing 31% of all global deaths. However, despite the advancement of molecular and clinical research we are not able to prevail in the battle against CVD. The burden of CVDs continues to rise in developing countries and it is estimated that 60% of the world's heart disease patients will be Indians by 2030. Therefore, a strong convergence of basic and clinical research with a stress on nutritional aspect is the need of hour for the cardiovascular research community.
The Indian section of ISHR, with its secretariat at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, has a commitment to promote the discovery and dissemination of knowledge in cardiovascular sciences world-wide, through publications, congresses and other media. One of the important goals of this conference is to foster a network between clinicians and researchers working in the field of cardiovascular disease which would certainly accelerate translational research in our country.
I hope we have been successful in bringing the basic scientists and the clinicians working in the field of cardiovascular diseases to one platform. Apart from technical sessions, orations and plenary lectures, we look forward to two award sessions, where a few abstracts submitted by students/young scientists will be selected for oral presentation and two awards one each in basic and clinical science will be given.
On behalf of the organizing committee, I welcome you to participate actively in the 14th Annual Meeting of International Society for Heart Research (Indian Section), focusing on “Cardiovascular Disease: Current Advances in Nutritional, Clinical and Molecular Research”
