  The Beginning Top

When India became independent, the need for an institution where medical care, education, and research could go hand in hand became obvious.

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) was the brainchild of Rajkumari Amrit Kaur. The Princess of Kapurthala had her early education at Sherborne School for Girls in Dorset. She was awarded the Doctor of Laws by Princeton University in 1956. She dreamt of making an institute where students would be able to get a postgraduate education in medicine in India and also pursue research of the highest standards. She leveraged funds for its magnificent buildings and her hand-picked eminent academics, from India and abroad, as its founding faculty [Figure 1] and [Figure 2].
